Drive with your car
Drive on Uber. Let Detour carry the rest.
Set your own hours, keep your own vehicle or take one of ours, and stop letting an empty tank decide whether you work tomorrow.
What the median driver earns
R5 165 per week, before costs
Gross fares in a median week, before commission and your own costs. Not a guarantee. See what affects this
A Detour Drive Account is needed
Joining Detour opens your Detour Drive Account. Choose a plan to keep it active: that is what unlocks Detour Capital, the Fuel card and every benefit.
Become a driver
Sign up in the Detour driver app. Kairah asks a few questions, one at a time, and an onboarding agent calls you, usually the same working day.
Get started
Four steps and you're driving
Most of it happens on your phone. No branch, no queue, no paperwork.
-
1
Register
Tell us how to reach you and what licence you hold. Two minutes, and it's the step that makes everything after it possible.
-
2
Pick a tier
On-The-Go, Professional Driver or MyOwnBoss. It sets how much Detour Capital you can borrow, and you can move between them later.
-
3
Give Uber consent
Accept Uber's consent so your Detour deductions come off your earnings automatically. It happens on Uber's own site and takes a minute.
-
4
Get your agreement
We send you your fixed term agreement to read and sign. Nothing can be sent until the Uber consent exists, which is why it comes third and not first.
We do this
Consent is third because it happens on Uber's site and they don't tell us you did it. Register first and we know who you are either way.
What you get
What you actually get
Driving already pays. Detour is what stops the week between payouts deciding whether you work.
-
Drive when it suits you
Evenings, weekends, full weeks. It's your call. Detour doesn't put you on a shift.
-
Fuel that doesn't end your shift
Use a Mobility Voucher when the tank or the battery is low. EV charging is on every plan; for petrol and diesel, On-The-Go covers motorbikes and scooters and a car needs Professional Driver or MyOwnBoss.
-
A car if you need one
No vehicle? Join our Fleet and choose one, with insurance, tracking and AA cover included.
Choose your plan
Three plans. Pick what fits your week.
Mobility Vouchers for fuel and EV charging on every plan. Detour Capital: R500 a week on On-The-Go, R1 000 on Professional Driver, and R2 500 on MyOwnBoss. Read across the cards to see what else you get as you go up.

What each benefit means
- Detour Capital
- On On-The-Go, take R500, pay back R720. On Professional Driver, take R1 000, pay back R1 270. On MyOwnBoss, take R2 500, pay back R2 870. That is what you borrow, plus R120 interest and fees, plus your plan's weekly subscription, and you pay it all back in one week, from your next week's Uber earnings. After that week your subscription carries on as normal. Once it is paid back, you can ask again whenever you need it, while your subscription is active. It is paid into your Detour Drive Account, which you open in the driver app.
- AA Stand-by-you service
- A driver sent to you, and the car brought home, when you cannot drive it yourself. The distance covered depends on your plan.
- Mobility Vouchers
- What a voucher costs is confirmed before you sign up.
- Data-free apps
- Detour zero-rates all three, so navigating and staying online doesn't eat the data you paid for.
- Armed response
- An armed response unit to the car when you raise a panic, wherever you are parked.
- Reduced subscription to Cartrack Dual Vision
- The dual-facing camera at a Detour rate. Footage is what settles an accusation that would otherwise be your word against a rider's.
- Telephonic legal advice
- A lawyer on the phone when something happens on the road and you need to know where you stand before you say anything.
- Technical advice
- Someone who knows cars, on the phone, before you authorise a repair you are not sure the car needs.
- AA roadside patrol assistance, with towing at a reduced rate
- AA South Africa out to the car when it stops, and a patrol to get it going at the roadside. If it cannot be got going, the tow is yours to pay at a reduced AA rate.
- AA roadside assistance, with tow and patrol
- AA South Africa out to the car when it stops, a patrol to get it going and a tow when it will not, so a breakdown is not a week off the road. A tow after an accident runs through the insurer instead.
On every tier, including the cheapest
- Detour Mobile
- Included
- A decent phone and data without paying for it all at once. It comes off your earnings.
- Retail vouchers
- Included
- Buy your electricity, airtime, data and groceries in chat, at the same price you would pay in the shop.
- Financial education
- Included
- Straight answers about your money, on the web, the Detour app or WhatsApp. It costs you nothing.
- Driver Assistance Programme
- Included
- Someone to talk to when the week is heavier than the driving. Social workers and trauma counselling, free to use.
- Medical assistance
- Included
- An emergency line and medical help to wherever the car is. For you, not for the vehicle.
- Pothole assist
- Included
- The claim against the road authority put together for you when a pothole damages the car, so the repair is not simply yours.
- Vehicle licence renewal
- Included
- The renewal handled before the disk expires, so a roadblock is a wave through rather than a fine.
- Fine payment
- Included
- Fines found, checked and settled on your behalf, before one becomes a warrant and a warrant becomes a morning in court.
Cartrack, AA South Africa and Bluecom (Blue Label Unlimited Group) provide the tracking, roadside and data-free benefits above under partnership with Detour. Detour is responsible for those arrangements, not Uber.

What things actually cost
Two different products at two different prices, and only one of them depends on your tier. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
-
Detour Capital

On On-The-Go, take R500, pay back R720. On Professional Driver, take R1 000, pay back R1 270. On MyOwnBoss, take R2 500, pay back R2 870. All back in one go, from next week's Uber earnings.

-
Weekly subscription
R100 to R250 a week
Your tier fee. It is charged on top of anything you owe, and it is non-refundable.
Paying it back
How Detour Capital works
On On-The-Go, take R500, pay back R720. On Professional Driver, take R1 000, pay back R1 270. On MyOwnBoss, take R2 500, pay back R2 870. That is what you borrow, plus R120 interest and fees, plus your plan's weekly subscription, and you pay it all back in one week, from your next week's Uber earnings. After that week your subscription carries on as normal. Once it is paid back, you can ask again whenever you need it, while your subscription is active.
-
1. Ask
Ask in the driver app: R500 a week on On-The-Go, R1 000 on Professional Driver, and R2 500 on MyOwnBoss.
-
2. Receive
It is paid into your Detour Drive Account, which you open in the driver app.
-
3. Pay back
What you took, plus R120 interest and fees, plus your plan's weekly subscription, comes off your next week's Uber earnings.
Work it out
What if I borrow from Detour Capital, or I'm still paying something off?
Put in your real numbers. This adds up everything that comes off your week, so nothing surprises you on payday.

- Uber service fee
- Fuel
- Your car
- Detour subscription
- Other debt
- Left for you this week
Change any number to match how you actually drive.
An illustration built from numbers you entered. Not a quote, not an offer of credit, and not a promise of earnings. Real earnings vary by city, hours and demand. What a Mobility Voucher costs is confirmed before you sign up.
Some factors to remember
R5 165 is a median, not a promise. Here is everything that moves it.
- These earnings are paid by riders, not by Detour, and they are not guaranteed. What you actually take home depends on how much you drive and where.
- The figures are gross fares. Commission, fuel, data, tyres, servicing and your own time all come out of that number before it is yours.
- Earnings include fares and campaign incentives. Both change without notice and vary by city.
- The median in your area may sit below the national figure, and your own week depends on the hours you choose and the demand you meet.
- The weekly subscription fee is non-refundable, and it is charged on top of anything else you owe that week.
- Detour Capital is cash you borrow and pay back the week after. A Mobility Voucher is fuel or EV charging you take now and settle from earnings. They are not the same product.
- Detour Capital is R500 a week on On-The-Go, R1 000 on Professional Driver, and R2 500 on MyOwnBoss, and it costs R120 interest and fees, plus your plan's weekly subscription. On On-The-Go, take R500, pay back R720. On Professional Driver, take R1 000, pay back R1 270. On MyOwnBoss, take R2 500, pay back R2 870.
- If you take a vehicle from our Fleet, that is a fixed-term agreement with real obligations. Read it before you sign it.
We find the driver, check them, and put them in your car. You choose who it is.

Detour Verified means
- Identity (KYC)
- Background and criminal checks
- Home inspection
- Licence verification
- Traffic fines
