Why Detour
Driving should pay you properly
Cash when the week needs it, with every cost stated before you take it, and no car you spend three years paying for and never own. Detour is the financial layer built around how driving actually pays, week by week.
The difference
More of the good stuff
We do more of what a driving week needs and less of what gets in the way of it.
More of this
- Yes: Detour Capital cash in one go, paid back in one week, with every rand of the cost stated first.
- Yes: A car on one weekly amount, with insurance, tracking, maintenance and AA cover in it.
- Yes: Your profile and your rating are yours, whichever way you come in.
- Yes: Accredited and short courses, paid weekly, for you and your household.
- Yes: Kairah for answers any time, and a person on WhatsApp when something goes wrong.
Not this
- No: A loan that runs on for months, with the cost buried in the small print.
- No: A deposit, a balloon and three years of instalments before a car is yours.
- No: Driving on somebody else's account, where the rating is not yours to keep.
- No: A rate that changes without anybody telling you what changed.
- No: Fees that only appear on the statement.
- No: A support queue with no reference and no answer.
Get started
Four steps and you're driving
Most of it happens on your phone. No branch, no queue, no paperwork.
-
1
Register
Tell us how to reach you and what licence you hold. Two minutes, and it's the step that makes everything after it possible.
-
2
Pick a tier
On-The-Go, Professional Driver or MyOwnBoss. It sets how much Detour Capital you can borrow, and you can move between them later.
-
3
Give Uber consent
Accept Uber's consent so your Detour deductions come off your earnings automatically. It happens on Uber's own site and takes a minute.
-
4
Get your agreement
We send you your fixed term agreement to read and sign. Nothing can be sent until the Uber consent exists, which is why it comes third and not first.
We do this
Consent is third because it happens on Uber's site and they don't tell us you did it. Register first and we know who you are either way.
Choose your plan
Three plans. Pick what fits your week.
Mobility Vouchers for fuel and EV charging on every plan. Detour Capital: R500 a week on On-The-Go, R1 000 on Professional Driver, and R2 500 on MyOwnBoss. Read across the cards to see what else you get as you go up.

What each benefit means
- Detour Capital
- On On-The-Go, take R500, pay back R720. On Professional Driver, take R1 000, pay back R1 270. On MyOwnBoss, take R2 500, pay back R2 870. That is what you borrow, plus R120 interest and fees, plus your plan's weekly subscription, and you pay it all back in one week, from your next week's Uber earnings. After that week your subscription carries on as normal. Once it is paid back, you can ask again whenever you need it, while your subscription is active. It is paid into your Detour Drive Account, which you open in the driver app.
- AA Stand-by-you service
- A driver sent to you, and the car brought home, when you cannot drive it yourself. The distance covered depends on your plan.
- Mobility Vouchers
- What a voucher costs is confirmed before you sign up.
- Data-free apps
- Detour zero-rates all three, so navigating and staying online doesn't eat the data you paid for.
- Armed response
- An armed response unit to the car when you raise a panic, wherever you are parked.
- Reduced subscription to Cartrack Dual Vision
- The dual-facing camera at a Detour rate. Footage is what settles an accusation that would otherwise be your word against a rider's.
- Telephonic legal advice
- A lawyer on the phone when something happens on the road and you need to know where you stand before you say anything.
- Technical advice
- Someone who knows cars, on the phone, before you authorise a repair you are not sure the car needs.
- AA roadside patrol assistance, with towing at a reduced rate
- AA South Africa out to the car when it stops, and a patrol to get it going at the roadside. If it cannot be got going, the tow is yours to pay at a reduced AA rate.
- AA roadside assistance, with tow and patrol
- AA South Africa out to the car when it stops, a patrol to get it going and a tow when it will not, so a breakdown is not a week off the road. A tow after an accident runs through the insurer instead.
On every tier, including the cheapest
- Detour Mobile
- Included
- A decent phone and data without paying for it all at once. It comes off your earnings.
- Retail vouchers
- Included
- Buy your electricity, airtime, data and groceries in chat, at the same price you would pay in the shop.
- Financial education
- Included
- Straight answers about your money, on the web, the Detour app or WhatsApp. It costs you nothing.
- Driver Assistance Programme
- Included
- Someone to talk to when the week is heavier than the driving. Social workers and trauma counselling, free to use.
- Medical assistance
- Included
- An emergency line and medical help to wherever the car is. For you, not for the vehicle.
- Pothole assist
- Included
- The claim against the road authority put together for you when a pothole damages the car, so the repair is not simply yours.
- Vehicle licence renewal
- Included
- The renewal handled before the disk expires, so a roadblock is a wave through rather than a fine.
- Fine payment
- Included
- Fines found, checked and settled on your behalf, before one becomes a warrant and a warrant becomes a morning in court.
Cartrack, AA South Africa and Bluecom (Blue Label Unlimited Group) provide the tracking, roadside and data-free benefits above under partnership with Detour. Detour is responsible for those arrangements, not Uber.

FAQ
Questions drivers ask
Is Detour Capital a loan?
Yes. Detour Capital is a short-term loan from a registered credit provider. Each request is assessed, so approval is not guaranteed. You pay back what you borrowed, plus R120 interest and fees, plus your plan's weekly subscription, in one week, from your next week's Uber earnings. A Mobility Voucher is separate, priced separately and shown separately.
What happens to my Uber account?
Your profile and your rating are yours and you never start again. What changes depends on the door. Drive with your car: the account stays entirely yours. In a Detour car: your profile moves into our Uber fleet, your earnings land in our Uber wallet, and we pay them into your Detour account every Tuesday. Kairah says this in the application too, before you commit to anything.
What happens at the end, do I own the car?
On a subscription you do not, and we say so rather than letting you assume it. There is no finance and no balloon either, which is the trade: you pay a deposit and it comes back, instead of paying off a car for years. If owning the car is the point, Drive with your car is the door.
What does it cost to join?
Nothing to apply. The weekly fee depends on the plan you pick, and every plan is on the pricing table above with what is in it.
Who do I talk to when something goes wrong?
Ask Kairah first: she answers most questions any time, in the chat on every page. For anything she can't sort out, speak to an agent on WhatsApp during the day, or by email.
Closed · back tomorrow at 10:00
Talk to a person on WhatsApp
A person answers on weekdays, from 10:00 to 15:00. Outside those hours, Kairah answers straight away, and the team picks up your message on the next working day.
For a payment that went wrong, an accident or damage, or a problem with your account. Have the mobile number on your Detour account to hand.

The Detour Drive Account
Your Detour Drive Account is two minutes away
Two minutes to apply, and an onboarding agent calls you, usually the same working day. Your plan keeps the account active, and everything Detour offers runs through it. Plans from R100 to R250 a week.
