The partnership

Valternative runs South Africa's largest electric fleet and its battery-swap network. Detour puts those vehicles on Subscribe to Drive, so a driver gets into an electric car or onto an electric bike the same way they get into a Swift: a weekly amount, and the rest looked after.

Before you apply

Minimum requirements

Your agent goes through them on the call. OpenWheels' brand-new cars take no deposit.

  • Deposit from R5 000

    A deposit secures your vehicle and covers operational costs. You get it back at the end of your term, or after a month: we inspect the vehicle for damage and pay you back within 7 days of that inspection, less anything owing.

  • A valid licence and ID

    A South African driving licence and the right to work here. You confirm both when you apply, and bring certified copies of your licence and ID to the call.

  • A smartphone

    You need one to drive: the Uber app, the Detour app and the deliveries you take all run on it.

  • Somewhere we operate

    We are in 15 cities across South Africa. Tell us where you are and your agent confirms what is available there.

  • No criminal record

    Applicants must have no criminal record to be approved. It is checked before you are given a vehicle.
