Inside Detour

The driver who came all the way from Pretoria

A single mom drove from Pretoria to sit down with us. What she taught me about money, pressure and talking early is in everything we build.

A South African city from above

Some days at Detour are spreadsheets and phone calls. One day I will not forget was a driver who came all the way from Pretoria to sit down with us in person.

She was a single mom, working hard to keep her car on the road and her family fed. She had taken cash from us to get through a hard week, and the week after had not gone the way she planned. She could not settle it on time, and she was worried. Worried enough to drive a long way to say so face to face.

What we did

We did not start with what she owed. We started with her week. What she was earning, what was going out, what had gone wrong. Then we worked out, together, how she could settle it while she kept driving.

She kept driving. She kept earning. And she got some breathing room instead of pressure she could not afford.

When we were done, she hugged me. It was the first time a customer had ever done that. I still think about it.

Nothing about her situation was unusual. A car to keep running, children to feed, one bad week landing on top of another. What was unusual was that she came to us before it got worse, instead of hiding from it. That one choice made everything after it easier.

What she taught me

That conversation changed how I think about what we do. Driver finance cannot just be a product on a screen. It has to be a relationship with people who understand what a driver's week actually looks like.

A driver under pressure does not stop needing money. They stop sleeping. They drive tired. They borrow from someone else to cover the first loan. Pressure does not make anyone pay faster. It makes everything worse.

It also changed how I think about the team. The people who answer drivers' messages are not a cost centre. They are the part of Detour a driver actually meets. If they do not understand a driver's week, nothing else we build will matter much.

This cannot just be a product. It has to be a relationship built on understanding what a driver's week looks like.

Why I am telling you this

Because the lesson is for you as much as for us: if a week goes wrong, talk early.

Life does not read the terms of any agreement. A slow week, a sick child or a car in the workshop can land on anyone. If you can already see that next week's earnings will not cover what you owe, say so before the day it is due, not after.

Whoever you owe, the earlier they hear from you, the more room there is to work something out. A conversation a week early is a plan. The same conversation a week late is a crisis, and by then the options are fewer and more expensive.

And look at the real week, not the hopeful one. Write down what came in, what went out and what is coming. It is much easier to agree on a way through when both sides are looking at the same numbers.

What I ask of every driver

  • Only take what you know next week can carry.
  • If something changes, tell whoever you owe before the payment is due, not after.
  • Do not borrow from someone else to repay a loan. It makes the hole deeper.
  • Come and talk to us. You do not have to drive from Pretoria. Kairah, our assistant, is on every page, and a person is on WhatsApp during the day.

That driver did not need a lecture. She needed someone to look at her real week and help her get through it. That is the standard I hold this whole company to.

If a week goes wrong, talk to us early. That is what we are here for.

Why we built Detour Capital the way we did

Driver finance can make money from drivers who struggle, or from drivers who do well. We chose the second. Here is how that shapes every part of the product.
