Subscribe to Drive is how you get a car to work in through Detour without buying one. You pay one weekly amount, and the costs that usually catch drivers out are already in it.
What the weekly amount includes
- A newer car to drive for work.
- Insurance.
- Tracking.
- Maintenance and tyres.
- AA cover.
- No limit on the kilometres you drive.
Each car on the site shows its own weekly price. We also run more vehicles than the ones listed, and your agent can price those with you on the call.
What it is not
We would rather say this plainly than let you assume it.
- It is not finance. There is no car loan and no balloon payment at the end.
- You do not own the car at the end. You are paying for a car that works, not one that becomes yours.
- If owning a car is the point for you, Drive with your car is the better door.
The deposit
You pay a deposit when you take the car, and it comes back. Each car's page shows its deposit, and your agent goes through the conditions with you before you sign.
Which plan you need
Taking a car from Detour means being on the MyOwnBoss plan, at R250 a week, for as long as you have the car. That plan carries everything on Professional Driver, the AA Stand-by-you service at 200 km roundtrip, Mobility Vouchers for fuel and EV charging, and Detour Capital of R2 500, paid back as R2 870 from your next week's Uber earnings.
Your Uber account
Your Uber profile and your rating are yours, and you never start again from zero. In a Detour car, your profile moves into the Detour Uber fleet while you drive with us. Your earnings land in Detour's Uber wallet, and Detour pays them into your Detour account. Kairah explains this in the application too, before you commit to anything.
Electric options
Subscribe to Drive includes electric cars and motorbikes from Valternative Energy, on the same weekly subscription. No fuel: a car is charged, and a bike's battery is swapped. Mobility Vouchers cover EV charging on every Detour plan.
Getting started
- Look through the cars on the Subscribe to Drive page and note the ones that fit how you drive.
- Check the requirements listed under the cars. They are the same for every car in the fleet.
- Apply, telling us which car and where you drive. An agent checks availability before they call.
- On the call, go through the weekly amount, the deposit and the agreement. Ask every question you have.
