Vehicle subscription terms

For a driver taking a vehicle from Detour. The weekly amount, the deposit, and what you are responsible for.

Effective November 2, 2026

Back to all legal documents

Detour Capital is a short-term payday loan from Pronto Loans, a registered credit provider (NCRCP 10240). Read Pronto Loans' terms and conditions.

These terms are between you and Detour Holdings t/a Detour Limited (Pty) Ltd, registration number 2025/819492/07 ("Detour"). They govern a vehicle you take from Detour on Subscribe to Drive.

This is a subscription, not a sale and not a rent-to-own. You do not own the vehicle, you are not buying it, and nothing you pay builds equity in it. There is no balloon payment and nothing to settle at the end.

Taking a car from Detour requires the MyOwnBoss tier, and an electric bike at least the On-The-Go tier. The tier is charged separately under the Subscription tier terms, and the weekly rental and the tier fee are both payable every week you have the vehicle.

What you pay

The weekly amount is the amount published for that vehicle on the day you take it. It is collected weekly, in advance, from the earnings that reach us on your behalf.

For a petrol vehicle, the weekly amount includes insurance, tracking, servicing, tyres, licensing and roadside assistance. There is no limit on the kilometres you drive. A Valternative electric car or bike is priced and covered as set out under "Valternative electric cars and bikes" below.

Roadside assistance on this vehicle covers towing and patrol, within a maximum of 200 km round trip, and is provided by the AA. It does not cover a tow that comes out of an accident or out of an insured event: the vehicle is insured, and a tow after an accident runs through the insurer. The Subscription tier terms set out the rest of what the AA provides.

It does not include fuel or charging, tolls, or your own traffic fines.

We may change the weekly amount on 30 days' notice to you. If you do not accept the change, you may hand the vehicle back before it takes effect without penalty.

The deposit

A deposit is payable before you take the vehicle. The amount is the one published for that vehicle, and it is paid by card on our website.

The deposit secures the vehicle and covers operational costs. It is not rent, it is not a fee, and it is not part of the weekly amount.

For a petrol vehicle, you get it back at the end of your term, or after a month of use of the vehicle. We inspect the vehicle for damage, and pay you back within 7 days of that inspection, less the cost of any damage and less anything you owe. The deposit on a Valternative electric car or bike is set out below.

Without the deposit, or the upfront payment on a Valternative vehicle, you cannot take the vehicle.

Valternative electric cars and bikes

The electric cars (4W) and bikes (2W) on Subscribe to Drive come from Valternative. These terms apply to them in addition to the rest of this document, and where the two differ, this section applies.

  • Electric car: R2 500 per vehicle per week, excluding energy and charging.
  • Electric bike: R1 225 per bike per week, energy included. It gives you access to Valternative's two-wheeler battery swap and energy network, subject to its operating conditions.

Before deployment an upfront deposit equal to the first week is payable: R2 500 for a car, R1 225 for a bike. You pay R500 for a car or R225 for a bike upfront, to show your commitment. The rest of the deposit, R2 000 for a car or R1 000 for a bike, is lent to you through Detour Capital, a short-term loan from a registered credit provider, on condition that you agree to its terms. You pay it back within a week of getting the vehicle, from your earnings: the amount lent plus R120 interest and fees and the subscription of the tier the vehicle needs, so R2 370 for a car (R2 000 + R120 + R250 MyOwnBoss) and R1 220 for a bike (R1 000 + R120 + R100 On-The-Go). The Detour Capital terms apply to that loan. No vehicle or bike is released for deployment until the upfront payment has been received.

Energy is not included in the R2 500 weekly car rental. Charging on the Valternative charging network is charged separately per kWh, based on actual usage, at R7.00 per kWh. Energy usage is recorded and billed directly to you.

Variable and additional charges are billed in arrears: everything usage-based or additional in a week is calculated and billed at the end of that weekly billing cycle. These may include:

  • Car energy usage at R7.00 per kWh.
  • Repairs that fall outside the applicable maintenance plan or warranty.
  • Accident or damage to the vehicle.
  • Insurance excesses.
  • Towing and recovery.
  • Tyre damage.
  • Negligent or abusive use.
  • Lost equipment or accessories.
  • Any other charge that arises from how you drove, rode or kept the vehicle.

Maintenance, warranty and repairs. Scheduled servicing, preventative maintenance and repairs are covered by the vehicle's maintenance plan or the manufacturer's warranty.

Everything outside that plan or warranty is charged to you, including, where it applies: accident damage; your negligence; misuse or abuse; repairs the plan or warranty does not cover; insurance excesses; tyre damage and punctures beyond normal fair wear and tear; towing and recovery that you caused; lost keys; lost or damaged accessories or equipment; unauthorised repairs or modifications; and any other cost to the vehicle the plan or warranty does not cover. These amounts are payable in addition to the weekly amount and any energy charges.

What you are responsible for

  • Holding a valid South African driving licence and the right to work in South Africa, and producing certified copies on request.
  • Driving the vehicle yourself. Nobody else may drive it without our written agreement.
  • Keeping the vehicle somewhere secure. It goes home with you.
  • Fuel or charging, tolls and your own traffic fines.
  • Reporting an accident, a theft or damage to us immediately, and in the case of a crime, to the police.
  • Keeping the tracker fitted and working, and not interfering with it.

Insurance and what you pay towards a claim

The vehicle is insured, and the cover is arranged through KMJ One Capital, FSP 48696, introduced by Detour. Detour is not a financial services provider and gives you no advice about the cover.

Cover is a condition of having the vehicle, not an option. Driving it outside the terms of the policy, meaning under the influence, without a valid licence, or for a purpose the policy excludes, can leave you personally responsible for the whole loss.

Where a claim carries an excess, what you pay towards it is set out in your schedule to these terms and is explained to you before you sign.

Handing the vehicle back

You may hand the vehicle back at any time on 7 days' notice. The deposit is dealt with as set out above.

We may take the vehicle back immediately if: the weekly amount is unpaid and stays unpaid after we have asked; the vehicle is being driven by somebody else; it is uninsured or unroadworthy; the tracker has been interfered with; or you lose the right to drive on the platform your earnings come from.

Taking the vehicle back does not cancel what you already owe, and, for a petrol vehicle, does not cancel our obligation to return your deposit, less damage and less anything owing.
